How to Choose a Diesel Generator for Your Business

Build a useful load schedule, separate running and starting demand, and prepare a configuration-and-delivery enquiry.

Start with the loads you must supply

A generator quotation is more useful when it starts with a load schedule rather than a single capacity number. List the equipment that must operate during the same period, the equipment that can wait, and any load you expect to add later. Keep the operating requirement separate from the generator rating you are considering. A requested 50 kVA generator is a purchasing target; it does not establish that a particular machine will support your site.

Record a practical equipment list

For each item, record its description, quantity, nameplate voltage and phase, electrical input and operating pattern. Include a photograph or document for equipment whose input is unclear. Tell the supplier which loads run together and which can be switched in sequence. Identify the largest motor, pump, compressor or HVAC start separately. Ask for a review of starting demand and the acceptable voltage and frequency changes; adding running loads alone can miss a starting constraint.

Keep kVA and kW separate

kVA describes apparent power; kW describes active power. For a numerical illustration, 50 kVA at a power factor of 0.8 corresponds to 40 kW. This calculation is not a test of a generator or a guarantee that every 50 kVA machine has the same duty, starting performance or usable site output. Read the supplier-confirmed ratings in both units and confirm the applicable power factor.

Specify the duty and electrical supply

State whether you need the generator as the normal source or as backup when the utility supply fails. Include the operating schedule rather than simply writing “continuous”. Confirm frequency, voltage and phase in the enquiry. Do not combine a 50 Hz reference with a 60 Hz project or assume that changing a voltage setting leaves every output rating unchanged.

Send site conditions with the load information

Include the country, city and postcode, installation location, site temperature and altitude if known, access dimensions and unloading arrangement. Tell the supplier about ventilation, exhaust routing, noise requirements and any limits on the equipment footprint. Ask for the site-adjusted output and installation information for the exact configuration. These details also help our transport team review packing and door-delivery scope.

Compare quotations against one configuration

Request the same engine, alternator, controller, enclosure, electrical supply and accessories in each offer. Keep the signed configuration list with the price. Ask for whole-generator fuel figures with their load conditions, noise figures with their distance and test method, dimensions, weight and packing details. Confirm the included oil/fuel filter kit by part number and quantity; an unspecified “spares pack” is difficult to compare.

Prepare your EY GENPOWER enquiry

Our current enquiry targets are 50, 100 and 200 kVA prime (PRP), corresponding to 40, 80 and 160 kW at a power factor of 0.8. These are capacity targets for project review. Standby output and the supplied configuration require written confirmation. Send your load schedule, starting details, required electrical supply, quantity and delivery destination so we can prepare a configuration-and-delivery quotation.

Start with a short enquiry

For a first enquiry, send your country, intended capacity or business use, quantity and a contact email or phone number. If the capacity is unknown, describe the equipment you need to supply. A full component list is not needed to start the conversation. We can then ask for nameplates, starting information, operating hours and site details to review a suitable configuration and door-delivery quotation.
